Integrating Process Mining within Appian
Appian is a software company that automates business processes. The Appian AI Process Platform includes everything needed to design, automate, and optimize even the most complex processes, from start to finish.
I was hired to support the implementation of process mining capabilities within the platform, enabling users to improve their business outcomes using process mining methodologies without needing a technical background.

Designing and Deploying Enhanced KPI Management in Appian Process Mining
After contributing to the implementation of the beta version of process mining capabilities within Appian, I played a key role in the productization of Process HQ—Appian’s out-of-the-box tool that empowers business users with actionable insights into their processes.
In this project, I will take you through the design process I led to implement the custom KPI creation flow, supporting business users in defining and visualizing process-specific metrics.

A UX Approach to Simplifying Complex Process Visualizations
I collaborated with Appian’s productization team to integrate a dynamic process diagram that uncovered the hidden intricacies of users’ processes. The initial diagrams didn’t capture the full complexity, so I repurposed an existing algorithm—drawing inspiration from Google’s layered rendering—to simplify the model into an interactive experience. This first increment lays the foundation for an ongoing project aimed at empowering users to fully explore and understand every facet of their process.

Javier created several prototypes with different approaches of fixing key drop-out points. In user tests, we could identify the best approaches allowing us to create a substantially improved UI. The redesign resulted in a substantially lower drop-out rate and better conversions leading our team to reach its OKRs.“
Building Brighter AI’s First Design System from Scratch
As the sole designer at Brighter AI, I led the creation of their first-ever design system to support the development of their anonymization tool.
Working closely with developers, I established scalable UI components, reusable UX patterns, and clear design guidelines. This effort ensured a consistent user experience, accelerated implementation, and maintained the integrity of the brand across the product.

Enhancing the data visualizations for the Appian Process Mining tool to improve progressive disclosure
In this project that I will be sharing soon I will show you how I tested with users, to better understand the way they approach the data subsets in process mining, and provided an improved version of the data visualization for Appian Process Mining.
